Although not as successful as JUST GOOD FRIENDS it did nevertheless gain generally favourable reviews.
HOMES AND GARDENS is set in the garden of a South London terraced house on a July evening in 1902, 1920, 1947 and 1984. The action takes place simultaneously, letting the audience sees various characters at different stages in their lives at the same time.

The above picture from the original production with settings by Marion Davies and costumes by Helena Seget, shows Jeni de Haart as Mary 1902, Yetunde Otuwehinmi as Mary 1920, Josephine Hunter as Mary 1947 and Julie Andrews (another one) and Kate Toller as Carole Crichton and Sonia Turner in 1984. The original production was directed by Kim Dambaek with musical direction by Peter Collis.
"Achieves a real sense of the frustration of suburban life in the twentieth century." Time Out.
"It must surely mark Mark Bunyan's emergence as brand leader among composers of the large scale musical." Hugh David in The Times Educational Supplement.
"Excellent integrated casting which proves once and for all that blacks can play whites with no sense of dislocation." City Limits.
